Winning 3rd place in INUAg’s 2015 awards for the educating communities category, Urban Harvest STL transforms forgotten city spaces into productive food scapes and inspires city dwellers to creatively grow food where they live. Through the Food Roof Farm, St Louis’s first rooftop farm, Urban Harvest STL provides healthy food to the community, enhances biodiversity in the city, and educates and inspires people to grow their own food. The Food Roof Farm provides opportunities for the entire community to get involved. The Farm is constructed between low‐income neighborhoods and the densely populated urban core reaching a diverse group of people crossing over socio‐economic boundaries.
This project is about educating the community and growing healthy food to build a more resilient local food system. The Food Roof Farm features a community hub space for educational workshops and events. Over 250 volunteers regularly participate in the farm, and an educational program involving 200 high school students launched this fall.
